Letter 0 – How it all started

Dear friends and family,

It is finally time, and the turbines of our first airplane are beginning to spin as i am typing these words. We are on are way to Singapore, the first stop on our journey, but in reality, our journey started long before today.

I have known since I was a kid that i would one day travel the world, inspired by my parents’ stories of their own adventures across the globe. When Leo and myself became friends in school, I found a likeminded adventurer, and we even discussed traveling together long before we even started our relationship. When we started dating, I made it clear that I would be gone for a while after finishing my studies – and very soon, Leo made it clear that I wouldn’t be doing it alone. My dream was no longer just mine – it was ours.

Fast forward a few years. Leo and I had just married, and I finally neared the completion of my studies. It was time! Leo quit her job (she had finished her studies a few years earlier) and we gave up our apartment in Vienna. The last few months we spend back at our parents while I completed writing up my two masters’ theses. It took a bit longer than expected, but when I finally finished, we celebrated together not just the completion of my studies, but the start of our lifes’ biggest adventure.

For the next 10.5 months, we will be living on the road, equipped only with our trusted backpacks and our insatiable curiosity for the unknown.
